48th Anniversary Petroushka Ball

Irina Kudrina and Anna NetrebkoAfter a hiatus of seven years, the Petroushka Ball returned to the Plaza Hotel’s beautiful and intimate Grand Ballroom on February 8, 2013. A seven inch snowstorm did not deter some 300 dinner guests and 200 after-dinner guests, in the Terrace Room, from enjoying an event filled evening. RCWS president Vladimir Fekula introduced various diplomats including Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations and Igor Golubovsky, Consul General of the Russian Federation in New York. Special guest speaker Madame Irina Kudrina, President of the Severnaya Foundation in Russia, flew in from Moscow and gave a lovely speech about the strong partnership that has developed over the past decade between the RCWS and Severnaya Korona Foundation in helping orphanages and other children’s organizations in giving at risk children a chance for a better future. Mr. Peter A. Fekula served as translator from Russian into English.

Metropolitan Opera Star and Honorary Director of RCWS, Anna Netrebko, made her fourth appearance at the Petroushka Ball and was spellbinding. Pianist Bradley Moore was the outstanding accompanist.

The Lester Lanin Orchestra, under the direction of Spencer Bruno, provided the dance music and was never better. During the evening, the Barynya Balalaika Orchestra and dancers provided the entertainment in the Terrace Room and also made a brief appearance in the Grand Ballroom.

Without exception, all who attended said this latest Petroushka Ball was one of the best they ever attended.
